On Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Marshall Music Showcase Session at Cafe Roux, featuring Kat Alice, Kathryn Swain and Ben Dey and The Concrete Lions. Marshall Music is showcasing some of Cape Town’s youngest musicians in weekly slots and it is part of a competition that they are running.
Marshall Music’s expertise and involvement with the local music industry has spanned more than two decades and they endorse many top musicians. They offer guitar repairs, re-strings and set ups, ranging from a simple polish to a fret dress and more. To find out more, check out their website: http://www.marshallmusic.co.za/home
Cafe Roux is a venue that is well known for hosting some of the finest musicians in our country and it was wonderful to hear that they had joined forces with Marshall Music to present these sessions. The venue offers a scrumptious menu full of delightful treats, ranging from burgers to delicious desserts. Their latest addition to the menu is a ‘carb free meal ‘- delicious Lamb Knuckle Curry served with cauliflower mash! The staff are the friendliest and most welcoming I have yet to meet. First up was a young lady by the name of Kat Alice. It was the first time I was watching her play and sing. I decided to do a little research upon returning home. Kat is a Singer / Songwriter and grew up in Hong Kong where she learned to play Piano, Guitar and Bass. She has graced the stage from the tender age of six and has performed in many musicals and shows. What a lovely kick start to a beautiful evening. I look forward to seeing where this young lady is heading, as her heart is firmly planted in what she does and her opportunities are limitless.

Next up was Kathryn Swain. I first met Kathryn, when she agreed to do a couch jam for the Mamma Gogo initiative which took place at Longbeach Mall in Noordhoek. I admire her greatly for her willingness to invest her time to such a worthy initiative. Kathryn is a person that loves the community and it showed in her nature throughout the session. Kathryn has an easy way about her and you feel comfortable in her presence, no small wonder that she has the audience eating out of her hand. Kathryn shares that her main instrument is her voice and she was classically trained from the age of seven. I see a deep passion within her, which burns brightly. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Kathryn. News hot off the press – Kathryn’s EP has just been released! Excitement fills the air! The EP is called “Little Box of Memories”.

Last, but certainly not least was Ben Dey and The Concrete Lions. The band took to the stage as if they were born for it. Last week I heard about the band, which came together literally one month ago. Benjamin Dey Tainton entered SA Idols last year and came in the top 10. Ben has taken the opportunity afforded him and grabbed it with both hands. This was evident on the evening, as I sat mesmerized by this new band. What I loved most, was the electrifying presence that they brought to the stage. Every person present, jumped to their feet and moved in rhythm to the funky sound that is Ben Dey and The Concrete Lions – not one person could hold themselves back, as a feeling of brotherhood was felt by all. Their music is a blend of Indie, Folk and a strong African fusion that is woven together to bring a new and different sound. At this point in the evening, I looked around and saw smiling faces all round. Their music is manifold and reflects a feeling of our African culture. Benjamin Dey Tainton and his band are tight and you can see the unity of the guys – they are on a roll and nothing is going to stop them.
